A New Trend
Fresh Start September
September has emerged as the new January for many people when it comes to setting goals and seeking a fresh start. Following Labor Day, as students return to school and summer vacations come to an end, many use this time to establish new routines and set resolutions to finish the year strong.
Here are three questions you can ask to guide your goal-setting process for a fresh start in September:
- Why do I want to achieve this goal?
- How will I hold myself accountable to this goal?
- What is the first step I will take to reach my goal?

5 steps that could help you take control of your financial life.
Once you have a handle on your money beliefs and the triggers that cause you stress, it’s time to make a plan for your new financial future. Here are five steps to help you start.
Identify and write down your goals.
- Think carefully about your goals—for the next year, for the following two to five years, and for your more distant future:
- Do you want to buy a home?
- Switch jobs?
- Start a business?
- Have a wedding?
- Retire without fear of running out of funds?
- Write down whatever is most important to you, with a specific timeframe, dollar amount, and priority level (“must-have” or “nice-to-have”).
Review the numbers.
Now that you know where, when, and what you want to achieve, see if your current spending allows for savings toward these goals. In other words, after taking your net paycheck and subtracting your “must have” expenses—like rent, utilities, student loan payments—and then your discretionary expenses—like travel, entertainment, and dining—is there enough left each month to save for your desired goals?
If not, let the tradeoffs begin! How can you adjust your discretionary expenses to achieve your goals? For example, are you willing to trade one vacation a year for a staycation in order to be able to have your dream wedding three years from now? Or are you willing to have a smaller wedding so that you can fulfill your desire for foreign travel? There is no one right answer. You must decide what is right for you. But compromises may be likely.
Prioritize saving.
Think of saving as paying yourself first. How much should you save? Aiming to save at least 10-15% of your income can be a good goal, especially if you are under 30. However, the later you begin to save, the more you should set aside to catch up.
Go on autopilot.
This may not sound important, but as much as possible, put your savings and bill-paying on automatic. A significant body of behavioral economic research supports the power of creating a path of least resistance for positive behaviors.
Continue to learn.
The last step in your journey toward financial well-being is to continue your financial education. You can do this by listening to podcasts, reading articles and books, consulting with a knowledgeable friend or family member, forging a relationship with a trusted advisor, or all of the above. When it comes to investing, make sure you understand the importance of compounding, diversification, and regular check-ins.
This Month’s Celebrations
Labor Day
Labor Day is a holiday most Americans can get behind! Yeah, it sadly means that summer is coming to a close, but it’s also a day that holds so much meaning. For one, it’s just another excuse to enjoy all the fun things to do on Labor Day, such as eat our favorite grilled foods, host pool parties, and spend some quality time with friends and family. Count me in! And while it’s certainly a day worth celebrating for all those reasons, there’s a bit more history behind the meaning of Labor Day, too.
Many of the rights we enjoy and take for granted today were hard-fought wins by the labor movement of the late 19th century. Labor Day was created to honor the women and men who campaigned tirelessly for workers’ rights, including a 40-hour work week, safe working conditions, paid time off, and sick leave. (Can you imagine what it was like before?!) They saw that there could be no freedom and liberty in this country without economic freedom for the working class. The holiday honors the source of this nation’s strength—American workers, unions, and labor leaders.
First Day of Fall
As the summer heat lingers, we yearn for the first day of fall—the arrival of sweater weather and fall movie nights spent cozied up under blankets. We can’t wait to break out our best pumpkin recipes.
But when is the first day of fall, and how is it determined? Cooler weather and changing leaves aside, astronomy—the autumn equinox, to be specific—tells us when summer ends and the official first day of fall arrives. Mark your calendars, the first day of fall is Monday, September 22, 2025.
5 Fascinating Facts About Fall
- Children born in the Fall may live longer – It has been found that people born in the Fall are more likely to live to 100 years old, and no, it’s not just a coincidence.
- Sugar in leaves affects their colors – Lots of dry weather and sunlight produce more sugars in the leaves, which leads to a brighter red, whereas colder temperatures stop the process that makes red pigments.
- Birds spend most of the Fall migrating- A Swainson’s Hawk can travel as far as 14,000 miles, while an Arctic Tern can cover about 44,000 miles.
- It can make people depressed – Not everyone enjoys Fall as much as they do spring, and about 5% of people suffer from a type of depression known as “Fall or Autumn depression.”
- The Earth’s equator never experiences Fall – People who live very close to the equator never experience Fall — it’s always warm around the equator.
Are You Ready for Some Football?
Are you ready for some football? That was me singing to you; you’re welcome! College football, that’s what fall is really about, right?
Every year, when Fall rolls around, there’s a spirit in the air. We celebrate everything from pumpkin spice lattes to cozy nights around the fire in our favorite sweaters. But there’s one classic Fall tradition that is unlike any other, and it’s the perfect reason to entertain – football! Whether you’re a die-hard sports fan or just there for the food & fun, football parties have a little something for everyone.
With football season beginning, we want to help kick it off. Be on the lookout for a planned season kickoff party coming to your community!
Last Month’s Celebrations
Company-Wide Bowling Event
To celebrate National Bowling Day, each property was encouraged to host a bowling outing for its hardworking employees. Though it does not appear that anyone will be going pro anytime soon, many folks spent some time together outside the office, sharing a few laughs while bonding over some bowling.

The school bell has rung, and the kids have returned to the classroom. Social media feeds were taken over by all the back-to-school photos, and we had to continue the trend. Here are a few back-to-school photos submitted to the newsletter crew:
Property Operational Tips
Severe Weather Preparedness
No matter where you live, you’re likely to encounter some form of severe weather. At its worst, severe weather can cause serious injuries or fatalities. Severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, sustained winds, and other severe weather hazards can leave you feeling panicked and scrambling if you don’t know what to do. There’s no reason to feel helpless when severe weather strikes; however, while the weather itself is out of your control, your response is not. If you want to know how to plan for these situations so that you’re ready when the time comes, follow these severe weather preparedness tips.
Safety Tips:
- Develop and practice an evacuation plan ahead of a severe weather event. Include a plan for pets and add any transportation routes and destinations in the plan. Prepare an emergency supplies kit for both family members and pets ahead of time to take with you. Be prepared to evacuate when authorities tell you to do so.
- Stay out of flood waters, if possible, and do not drive into flooded areas. Even water only several inches deep can be dangerous.
- Always assume fallen power lines are energized. Stay away from the area and report any downed lines to authorities immediately.
- Unplug appliances and other electrical items, such as computers and televisions, to prevent damage from surges caused by lightning strikes.
- If you evacuated, do not return to your home until local authorities say it is safe.
- Plan two ways out of the home in case of an emergency.
- Make sure your house number can be seen from the street. If you need help, firefighters will be able to find you.
